graphic design specialist strikes again!

In graphic design specialist on April 10, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young

I should rethink that title…Austin marketing mastermind strikes again??? lol. Getting used to saying Austin more and more as you can tell!

Anyway… I finished a new website and completed the seo on the site. I finished it on Monday night and loaded it. Tonight I received an email from the person I was doing the project for ( I was hired as a “ghost” freelancer … think of as a ghost writer except I made a website.)

They said the client was uber-happy and said the keywords (keywords I selected btw) were already placing the site on page one of google already. Even thought I will get ZERO credit for the job and the client will never know it was me, I’m still proud of my work.

I worked on that project alone and to hear the outcome is going so well makes me happy even though I can’t showcase it the way I wanted to.

I can still brag on my blog. lol.

It’s been a long month and I’m looking forward to what April is going to bring!

I guess I should invest in…

In graphic design specialist on April 8, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young

My friend Vers and I HATE spiders.

I MEAN HATTTEEEEEE spiders. Most people don’t like them. But I am horrified by them. I saw on in my car while driving and pulled over and proceeded to clean out my whole car right there. Luckily for me it was on a residential road.

One thing I will have to get used to in Austin is the insects. And by insects I’m talking scorpions which are apparently common out there along with giant cockroaches ( whoa…lol).

Great….lol.

Artist James Laurie created these glasses for capturing spiders that often hide in the corner. Don’t you hate it when they do that! I can’t kill them when they do that…and apparently this artist has the solution:

graphic design specialist

“Frustrated with spiders and other insects trapping themselves within a corner of a room making it difficult to catch. To counter this problem a glass was designed in collaboration with William Tapply, with a right-angled rim to correct this issue, cut and shaped accordingly from a tumbler glass. In order to retain the spider, whilst moving the glass away from the wall a folded sheet of paper is slipped between the glass and corner.”

This beats me always trying to kill spiders with windex since I can never find the can of bug spray when I really need it! Still…I don’t want to get that close to the spider to kill it and it seems this artist is trying to be kind and contain it so they can release it outside when my main goal is simple:

SPRAY/SMASH and KILL

Better stock up on bug spray now…

Thank you to http://baronesss.blogspot.com/ for making such a wonderful illustration ( using painter! ) I think I want to get back into painting. I have not touched a paintbrush since leaving Corcoran.

I’ve been missing…

In graphic design specialist on March 30, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young

I’m sorry everyone. I have been hiding lately! Things have been busy and I have not had time for my usual online banter. I have been very busy with projects and with a huge personal change that I hope will happen within the next couple of months.

I am preparing to move to Austin!

Yes! Austin! I know for many that is a big thing to hear. I am born and raised in Maryland, and I think many thought I would stay here my whole life. However I find my passions and hobbies are all located in Austin and after much praying, thinking and planning I have decided that moving there is the best thing to do. I am very excited about the move.

So I will be silent for a few weeks as I make plans and hopefully will be back soon to provide more details.

Creative Block: My cure

In graphic design specialist on March 16, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young

I find myself recently in a creative block. Projects, marketing myself, is leaving this web freelance guru a bit guru’ed out.

I did the usual medication for creative block – read tons of design and art magazines and zoned out for a few days. Unfortunately that didn’t help.

But a visit to http://www.inst-msgs.com did the trick!

Based on everything from submitted instant message conversations to found Craigslists ads, INST MSGS is creative, fun, serious, and thought provoking all at the same time. It quickly has become my new addiction.

my fave so far:

Ep. 7 “‘Missed’ Missed Connection”

My friends know I love to check out the missed connection section of Craiglist. I think its the funniest section of the whole site! This Shakespearean twist makes it even funnier. Even the GoDaddy commercial has a twist!

Hip Hop Militants

In graphic design specialist on March 4, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young Tagged: , ,

Many people know I have particular strong opinions when it comes to music, in particular hip-hop. I often find myself in heated debates with those who consider themselves “real hip hop heads”. Personally I find them music militants; hip hop soliders ready to declare jihad on any musician who is currently being played on the radio. One such artist is Waka Flaka. Now while I do not endorse his style of music, I refuse to make him another poster child for what is wrong with hip hop today. I think this video pretty much sums it up for me.

Mixtape Cover Template

In cool graphic design, flyer design template on March 4, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young Tagged: , ,

Hip Hop Mixtapes are a somewhat annoying because the vast majority are just downright corny. They always consist of the same three things:

1) Money

2) Half naked “vixens”

3) More Money

The recent covers I have seen have broken out of this rule, but they are the exception…NOT the rule…

I finally made a simple mix tape cover template that is free to download and can be used for a variety of purposes… and consist of the two most requested elements mention above…

yup…money and a chick…lol…I WON’T even mention the looks I got while working in starbucks on this mess.

take a look and download on my music industry blog.

Virgin America Disses Adobe Flash for New Site

In web freelance on March 3, 2010 by Lauren Janine Young Tagged: ,

If Virgin America can ditch flash for their site…why do so many still beg for it???

According to the airline, they plan a  big push into mobile this year and wants to be sure iPhone groupies users can access the Virgin America site and be able to complete the check-in process via the iPhone.

Flash or not to Flash… that is ALWAYS the question. Most of my clients know I am pro “tasteful flash”. Flash elements are okay, but a whole flash site is a not a good ideas for a variety of reasons.

I would list the reasons but I feel its a waste to do so. Why?

Most people who want flash already know the cons, but once they have made up their mind, regardless of the 302392039 articles on the interwebs that tell them they are wrong, they still want it. So my blog probably won’t change their mind either.

Can the web just get along!!!
